Visit from Stu Duval
Today New Zealand author, Stu Duval visited our school. He did shows for the year 7-8 and 5-6 students. Stu was very funny and entertaining. He did great art work and told a fantastic story, ‘Rat Island’ with lots of expression and sound effects!  Rat Island is his newest book and came out a few weeks ago.
Something else Stu did was a writing workshop for the year 5 - 8. He taught us some strategies to use while writing stories. The workshop helped us think of new ways to write stories. We thanked Stu for coming to our school and spending his time entertaining us.

Update on the NZ Post Book Quiz
The second heat for this took place here at Kenakena School last Tuesday May 10th.  After an amazing performance during the competition (and one perfect round!) our Junior (and Senior) teams both made it through to the finals.
Unfortunately we didn't place in the finals held last Friday in Waikanae...but we are very proud of their amazing efforts.
Ella Kirby wrote about the experience for the school newsletter:
BOOK QUIZ
Over the past  six weeks Kenakena’s two Book Quiz  groups have been preparing for a competition which schools around Kapti have entered in one or two teams each. In Kenakena’s year five and six group are Lily Edwards, Tara Keene, Isaac Linston, Vienna Jermyn, and Ella Kirby. The year seven and eight group is, Jordan Coventry, Finn Fox, Jamie Eaton, Krystal Wright, and Grace Lindsay. Each of these two teams have been had to read 15 books (fiction, non-fiction and picture books.) We have been working very hard studying each of the books. Both of the teams  got into the finals which are taking place  this Friday, the 13th of May. I think we will do well! Thanks to the teachers that have helped us prepare for this quiz. I’m so excited that we’re in the finals!

The Year 5/6 Writing Extension class is underway! The group has voted on its name so… The Kenakena Rocking Writers it is J
This will be the place to come to view examples of the children’s work and events they are involved in.
The aims of this group are:
  • Provide an opportunity for children to talk with an author and gain valuable insight into the writing process.
  • Give children experience writing a variety of genre.
  • Children adapt their writing to suit a purpose.
  • Encourage an attitude of persistence to revisit writing to make improvements using thinking tools.
  • Extend children’s vocabulary.
  • Guide children through the entire process of producing a quality finished piece of writing to be published and shared with others.

Congratulations to Ella, Vienna, Tara, Isaac and Lily. They are part of this group and have been selected to represent Kenakena School in the NZ Post Book Quiz early in term 2. They have a busy time ahead of them preparing for the quiz as there are 20 books involved! Good luck – happy reading!
